Nosiey Neighbour & Sound proofing
  • Dear Members
Has anyone experienced one of our neighbours on the top floor of NVH playing music at inappropraite times i.e.3.00 in the morning? I guess this may be a narrow shot as it will effect only 2-3 neighbours and it will depend if they are signed up to this site. Please do get in touch.

The other issue is the sound proofing - I really don't think this is part of the Barratts package although they boast about the insulation and how that contains noise. All Barratts have done is taken chunks out of my appt to check if the pipes have been insulated with the material they use. However, I can hear my neigbiour using the toilet so you can image what esle I can hear. I would also consider having some work done privately to block out the noise - any suggestions. I have been woken up several times on a Saturday night with loud talking and music. Help please!
  • Hi Amy

we live in the houses and we have no issues RE sound proofing. I can hear things very very slightly, like I heard my neighbour flushing their loo this morning at about 8am, but it wasn't loud enough to actually wake me up.

I've not heard music from NVH, only from HH when they first moved in but no issues since then.

  • Yes the noise is an issue for me also.

From the main road traffic, and from next door. Its not the neighbours fault as they're nice but we can hear everything going on in there kitchen and living room most nights.

Also there's no way of being able to rent out the second room which we did consider at first as a potential income but with the poor inner walls also this isn't going to be possible.

Let me know about your quote once you get one.
  • I would also be very interested as to what can be done about soundproofing.
At first I didn't notice it so much, but now the traffic noise from central road is beginning to bug me.

Also, I can hear my next-door neighbour opening and closing his front door, almost as if he were trying to open MY own door, and that sounds comes through into my en-suite... so the idea of HIM being able to hear ME whilst on the toilet isn't very appealing.

Apart from that it's kind of ok, only at night when it's VERY quiet, I can sometimes hear doors opening and closing, but that doesn't bug me just yet.

I would definitely LOVE to do something about the inner walls, as I feel it is like having no privacy whatsoever - but I don't know WHAT could be done about that, I tried looking online but most soundproofing websites talk about ways to soundproof DURING building, and not AFTER build is complete.
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who suffered with the sound problem (that sounds harsh, but it does prove it's not an isolated issue). Whoever it was partying, the noise kept me up all night. The thumping music sounded like it was next door, however I have no proof and don't like to point fingers. The least they could have done is warn that they were having a party or something. That would've been the courteous thing. Maybe next time I should take the advice of a friend and fight back with Egyptian death metal (I kid you not).

As for sound proofing in general, I don't believe there is any. I constantly hear my neighbour's light switches, doors open and close as well as toilet flushing. Worst of all, I can hear their flat's fan when it is boosted. This sound penetrates into my bedroom and drives me crazy. It really does make sleeping very difficult.

Since this is a wider reaching issue than I realised, I will definitely be contacting Barratts regarding this.
  • Richard, I have some pretty shocking metal albums you can borrow!!! ;)
  • Shocking as in people will hate it, or shocking as in I'll love it? :)
  • We have had problems with soundproofing in NVH ever since we moved in. We can hear all sorts of sounds including TV's, conversations, toilet use and phones ringing amongst others. We had been told specifically by the sales guys before we moved in that sound would not be a problem (we have also lived in another Barratt development and never had a problem with sound). Like Amy we have also had our place ripped apart to put in new insulation around the wastepipes (which has made no difference at all). Before he left Alan told us that the sound issue was likely related to the heating issue that I know many of us were having (something about any holes in the concrete would act as a speaker and magnify sound) and would be solved when any extra insulation was put in. We are still waiting on that work to be done but hopefully it will be soon, if it doesn't make a difference then I don't know what we'll do. I know that there are building regulations regarding soundproofing but am not sure what they are or how to test it. Hopefully it doesn't come to that.
  • Richard - I think its an acquired taste!!! I quite like it...I know my other half doesn't, which is why you've not heard it blasting out across the estate thus far!

May I suggest that you guys write to the MD of Barratts and threaten to go to the press? The local Guardian would have a field day slating something/someone else in the borough!!!
  • Hi everyone,

Just as way of a comparison in AH I haven’t had any noise issues, I can hear the road with the windows closed but just ever so slightly. I can hear my neighbours leaving their front door but that’s about it, no issues.

    just my feedback.

    Cheers
  • I guess I can be thankful that I bought a flat at the back of NVH which is isolated so doesn't have shared walls apart from the bedroom.... =)

TBH, soundproofing is crap.... I can hear the neighbour using her hairdryer sometimes but thankfully she doesn't use it at obscene times so I don't mind.

I also find it really annoying that I can hear doors banging, and I think some of these doors banging are actually caused by the fire doors in the hallways - they're spring hinged which means they shut by themselves, but without any soft-close option or padding on the frames they bang quite loud.
I feel sorry for those living next to the doors.......
